Briefed to design and prototype a toy for kids. We focused on how kids could find their own meaning in a space or object, to provide a means for them to play with their imagination and inspire creativity within them. It was also important for us to build a toy with a “play-ability” quality in them that adapted to individual needs and stages of development. Inspired by spaces that kids go to, we were drawn to the act of playing underneath a table. To imagine being someplace else, to create stories involving GI Joe vs Batman; Barbie and Ken. So underneath the table, there are sensors that will change the “mood” of the environment depending on what objects are underneath. The table top is plexi-glass so it can be written on with whiteboard markers both underneath the table and on top. We also designed an attachment mechanism to turn the tabletop onto a large paper canvas that can be easily cut and rolled.
